Platform 5 Hat

Published November 2, 2015 by Storm

Whether walking the dog or waiting for a train, autumn and winter offer plenty of opportunities for getting a cold head. A friend of ours had been asking for a bobble hat for a while; it took me a while to actually knit him one as it needed to be just the right shades of green. Eventually I found merino yarn in just the right colours and all that was left to do was come up with a pattern… I give you the Platform 5 Hat.

Knit in DK yarn on 4mm needles, I used 1 ball of Katia Merino 100% and 1 ball of Patons Merino Extrafine DK.

Abbreviations used:

k=knit      k2tog=knit 2 together

p=purl     skp=slip1,knit1,pass slipped stitch over (ssk if you prefer, I just found I get neater results with skp)

Pattern: (Very stretchy, should fit most teens and adults)

Use whichever technique you prefer for knitting in the round, I started using travelling loop and switched to using 2 circular needles at the decreases.

In contrasting colour, cast on 110 stitches and join in the round.

Ribbing: (k2, p3) repeat to end of round. Continue ribbing for 3 inches.

Switch to main colour.

Knit all stitches of each round for 4.5 inches.

Round 1: (skp, k18, k2tog) x5

Rounds 2 and 3: knit all stitches

Round 4: (skp, k16, k2tog) x5

Rounds 5 and 6: knit all stitches

Round 7: (skp, k14, k2tog) x5

Rounds 8: knit all stitches

Round 9: (skp, k12, k2tog) x5

Round 10: knit all stitches

Round 11: (skp, k10, k2tog)x5

Round 12: knit all stitches

Round 13: (skp, k8,k2tog) x5

Round 14: knit all stitches

Round 15: (skp, k6, k2tog) x5

Round 16: knit all stitches

Round 17: (skp, k4, k2tog) x5

Round 18: (skp, k2, k2tog) x5

Round 19: (skp, k2tog) x5

Cut yarn leaving a reasonably long tail. Using a yarn needle thread tail through remaining stitches and pull tight, secure as you feel happiest, weave in ends.

Using all remaining yarn of both colours, make a 3.5inch diameter pompom.

Attach pompom to top of hat.
